There’s something special about staying in touch with family, especially when they’re scattered across different cities, states, or even countries. Maybe your grandkids are away at college, your daughter moved to another state for work, or your siblings retired to different parts of the country. Whatever the case, staying connected matters more than ever.
You might have heard family members mention WhatsApp or Messenger and wondered what the fuss is all about. “Why can’t we just text?” you might ask. Well, these apps offer something regular texting doesn’t – free messaging to anyone in the world (as long as you have internet), group chats that actually work well, video calls, and the ability to share photos and videos without them looking compressed or blurry.
The best part? Setting up WhatsApp and Messenger is actually pretty straightforward once someone walks you through it. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do today.

What Are WhatsApp and Messenger (And Why Should You Care)?
Let’s start with the basics. WhatsApp and Messenger are messaging apps – think of them like texting, but with extra features and benefits.
What is WhatsApp?
- Owned by Facebook (now called Meta)
- Used by over 2 billion people worldwide
- Especially popular for international messaging
- Works over WiFi or cellular data (not traditional text service)
- Message anyone in the world without international fees
- All you need is an internet connection
- Completely free to use
What is Messenger?
- Facebook’s messaging app
- Connects directly to your Facebook account
- Message any Facebook friend instantly
- Can use without Facebook (though most connect it)
- Also completely free to use
- No per-message, per-photo, or per-call fees
Why your family wants you on these apps:
- Easy group chats: Everyone shares updates in one place instead of separate texts
- Better video calls: Crystal-clear quality, often better than regular phone calls
- Works on any phone: Unlike FaceTime (iPhone only), these work on iPhones AND Android
- Free international calling: Talk to family overseas without expensive phone bills
- Better photo quality: Photos and videos don’t get compressed like in regular texts
Setting Up WhatsApp vs Messenger: Which One Should You Choose?
This is the million-dollar question, and honestly, there’s no wrong answer. But here are some guidelines to help you decide.
Choose WhatsApp if:
- Your family members live internationally or travel abroad frequently (WhatsApp is huge outside the United States)
- You want something that feels more private and separate from social media
- You prefer using your phone number as your identity (no username needed)
- Your family is already using WhatsApp and asking you to join them there
- You don’t use Facebook and don’t want to create a Facebook account
Choose Messenger if:
- You’re already on Facebook and want everything connected in one place
- Most of your family and friends are on Facebook
- You like the idea of easily messaging anyone you’re friends with on Facebook
- You want fun features like stickers, games, and filters for video calls
- Your family is already using Messenger for group chats
Still not sure? Here’s our advice: ask your family which one they prefer. If they’re already using one or the other, join them there. It’s better to be on the app where your people are rather than choosing the “best” app but ending up alone on it. We’ve had clients in Irvine who set up WhatsApp only to realize their entire family uses Messenger – that’s an easy fix, but it’s easier to start with the right one from the beginning.
The good news is you can have both apps on your phone if you want. They don’t conflict with each other, and some families use WhatsApp for certain relatives and Messenger for others. You’re not locked into one forever.
How to Download and Set Up WhatsApp
Ready to get started with WhatsApp? Let’s walk through it together. The setup process is similar on both iPhone and Android, so we’ll cover both.
How to download WhatsApp (just 4 simple steps):
- Open your App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android)
- Tap the search icon and type “WhatsApp Messenger”
- Tap the green icon that says “WhatsApp Messenger” by WhatsApp LLC
- Tap “Get” or “Install” and wait for it to download (you might need to enter your Apple ID password or use Face ID)
Once it’s downloaded, you’ll see the green WhatsApp icon on your phone’s home screen. It looks like a white phone inside a green speech bubble. Now let’s set it up.
How to set up your WhatsApp account (just 6 simple steps):
- Tap the WhatsApp icon to open the app for the first time
- Tap “Agree and Continue” to accept the terms (yes, you should read them if you want, but most people just tap through)
- Enter your phone number including your area code (for Orange County, that’s usually 949, 714, or 657)
- Tap “Next” and WhatsApp will send you a verification code via text message
- Enter the 6-digit code that comes to your phone (it should auto-fill, but if not, type it in manually)
- Enter your name (this is how people will see you in their contacts) and optionally add a profile photo
That’s it! Your WhatsApp is now set up and ready to use. The app will ask if it can access your contacts – we recommend saying “Yes” because this helps WhatsApp show you which of your existing contacts are already using the app. Don’t worry, it doesn’t message anyone or share your information without your permission.
One thing that confuses people: WhatsApp uses your actual phone number as your identity. This means when you message someone on WhatsApp, they see your real phone number (if they don’t already have it saved). There’s no username or handle to remember. This makes it super simple but also means you should only message people you’d be comfortable giving your phone number to anyway.
How to Download and Set Up Messenger
If you’ve decided Messenger is the way to go, the process is just as straightforward. Let’s walk through it.
How to download Messenger (just 4 simple steps):
- Open your App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android)
- Tap the search icon and type “Messenger”
- Tap the blue icon that says “Messenger” by Meta Platforms, Inc.
- Tap “Get” or “Install” and wait for it to download
The Messenger icon is a blue circle with a white lightning bolt-style chat bubble inside. Once it’s installed, let’s get you set up.
How to set up your Messenger account (just 5 simple steps):
- Tap the Messenger icon to open the app
- Choose how you want to sign in – either with your Facebook account (if you have one) or with your phone number
- If using Facebook: Enter your Facebook email and password, then tap “Log In”
- If using phone number: Enter your phone number, then enter the confirmation code sent via text
- Set up your profile by confirming your name and optionally adding a profile photo
If you sign in with your Facebook account, Messenger automatically connects to all your Facebook friends, which makes it super easy to start chatting. If you sign in with just your phone number (without linking to Facebook), you’ll need to add contacts manually by their phone number or username.
Here’s something helpful: even if you’re not very active on Facebook, having Messenger connected to your Facebook account makes everything easier. Your family can find you instantly, and you can see when people message you without having to check two separate places. We’ve helped countless seniors in Mission Viejo set up Messenger this way, and it works beautifully.
Finding and Messaging Your Family Members
Now comes the fun part – actually connecting with your family! The process is slightly different for each app.
How to find and message someone on WhatsApp (just 5 simple steps):
- Tap the chat icon (looks like a speech bubble, usually in the bottom right corner)
- Tap the new chat icon (usually a pencil or plus sign)
- Look through your contacts – anyone with WhatsApp will have the green WhatsApp logo next to their name
- Tap the person’s name you want to message
- Type your message at the bottom and tap the send button (looks like a paper airplane)
If someone isn’t showing up in your WhatsApp contacts even though you know they use it, there are a few possible reasons. They might have a different phone number than what you have saved, or you might need to refresh your contacts. Try pulling down on the contacts list to refresh it, or ask them to send you their WhatsApp number directly.
How to find and message someone on Messenger (just 5 simple steps):
- Tap the compose icon (looks like a pencil and paper, usually in the top right)
- Start typing the person’s name in the search bar
- Tap their name when it appears in the search results
- Type your message in the text box at the bottom
- Tap the send button (arrow icon) to send your message
Messenger is often easier for finding people because if you’re Facebook friends, they automatically show up in your Messenger contacts. No need to hunt for phone numbers or wonder if you have the right contact information.
A quick tip for both apps: when you first start using them, send a simple “Hi! I’m on [WhatsApp/Messenger] now!” message to a few family members. This lets them know you’re set up and ready to chat. We’ve found that people are much more likely to message you back once they know you’re active on the app.
Sending Photos and Making Video Calls
Text messages are great, but let’s be honest – the real magic happens when you can share photos and see your family’s faces during video calls. Both apps make this incredibly easy.
How to send a photo on WhatsApp or Messenger (just 4 simple steps):
- Open a chat with the person you want to send a photo to
- Tap the camera icon or plus icon (varies by app and phone)
- Choose “Photo & Video Library” to select an existing photo, or “Camera” to take a new one right now
- Select your photo, then tap “Send” (you can add a caption if you want)
The photos you send through these apps look much better than photos sent through regular text messages. Regular texts compress photos to save data, which makes them look grainy and small. WhatsApp and Messenger send higher-quality images, so your grandkids’ faces look crisp and clear, not pixelated.
How to start a video call on WhatsApp (just 3 simple steps):
- Open a chat with the person you want to call
- Tap the video camera icon at the top of the screen
- Wait for them to answer – you’ll see yourself in a small window and them in the big window once connected
How to start a video call on Messenger (just 3 simple steps):
- Open a chat with the person you want to call
- Tap the video camera icon at the top right
- Wait for them to answer – your camera will turn on automatically when the call connects
Video calling through these apps is genuinely one of the best features. The quality is usually excellent (as long as you have good WiFi), and it’s completely free no matter how long you talk. We’ve had clients in Newport Beach who video chat with their kids in New York every Sunday morning using WhatsApp, and it’s like being in the same room together.
One thing to remember: make sure you’re in a well-lit area when you video call. Nothing fancy, just normal room lighting or natural light from a window. Dark video calls make it hard to see faces, and then what’s the point?
Joining and Using Group Chats
This is where WhatsApp and Messenger really shine. Group chats let your whole family stay connected in one conversation instead of dozens of separate messages flying around.
When someone invites you to a group chat, you’ll get a notification. Just tap it and you’re in! From there, you can read all the messages, reply to the group, send photos, and even react to messages with emoji (hearts, thumbs up, laughing faces, etc.).
Here’s what makes group chats wonderful: let’s say it’s your grandson’s birthday. Instead of five different people calling or texting you separately to tell you about the party, someone posts photos in the family group chat and everyone sees them at once. You can comment, everyone else can comment, and it becomes this shared moment even though you might all be in different places.
A few group chat tips we always share with our Orange County clients:
Mute notifications if it gets too chatty. Some families message constantly, which is lovely but can be overwhelming. Both WhatsApp and Messenger let you mute a group chat for 8 hours, 1 week, or forever. You’ll still see the messages when you open the app, but your phone won’t ding every two minutes.
You don’t have to respond to everything. Some people feel pressure to reply to every single message in a busy group chat. You don’t! Feel free to just read and enjoy. Comment when you have something to say, and skip the rest. Nobody’s taking attendance.
Ask questions if you’re confused. If the family is talking about something and you don’t understand the context, just ask! “What restaurant are we talking about?” or “Who’s Emma?” are perfectly fine questions. Your family wants you involved, and they’d rather explain than have you confused.
Don’t worry about “disturbing” people. Some seniors worry that sending a message to a group chat will bother everyone. Here’s the thing: people can turn off notifications if they want. Your message isn’t forcing anyone to read it immediately. Send your thoughts, share your photos, and let people respond when they have time.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
Even with the simplest technology, things can go wrong. Here are the issues we see most often and how to solve them.
Problem: “My messages won’t send.” Check your internet connection first. WhatsApp and Messenger need either WiFi or cellular data to work. If you’re on WiFi, make sure you’re connected (look for the WiFi symbol at the top of your screen). If you’re using cellular data, make sure it’s turned on in your Settings. No internet equals no messages.
Problem: “I can’t find someone even though I know they’re on the app.” For WhatsApp, make sure you have their correct phone number saved in your phone’s contacts first. Then open WhatsApp and pull down on the contacts list to refresh it. For Messenger, make sure you’re Facebook friends with them, or try searching by their phone number instead of their name.
Problem: “The app keeps asking me to verify my phone number again.” This sometimes happens if you reinstall the app or if there’s a security check. Just follow the prompts – WhatsApp or Messenger will send you a code via text, you enter it, and you’re back in business. If codes aren’t coming through, wait a few minutes and try again, or make sure you entered your phone number correctly with the right area code.
Problem: “Video calls are choppy or keep freezing.” This is almost always an internet speed issue. If you’re on WiFi, try moving closer to your router. If that doesn’t help, ask other people in your house to pause any downloads or streaming while you’re on the video call. You can also switch to a voice-only call (no video) which uses less internet and works better on slower connections.
Problem: “I accidentally sent a message to the wrong person.” Don’t panic! Both apps let you delete messages. On WhatsApp, press and hold the message you want to delete, tap “Delete,” then choose “Delete for Everyone” (if it’s been less than 2 days). On Messenger, press and hold the message and tap “Remove” then “Unsend for Everyone” (if it’s been less than 10 minutes). This removes it from both your chat and theirs.
Problem: “Someone’s messaging me and I don’t know who they are.” You don’t have to respond to strangers! If you don’t recognize a person who’s messaging you on WhatsApp or Messenger, you can block them. On WhatsApp, open the chat, tap their name at the top, scroll down, and tap “Block Contact.” On Messenger, tap their name, scroll down, and tap “Block.” They won’t know you blocked them, and they can’t message you anymore.
Privacy Settings You Should Know About
Both WhatsApp and Messenger have privacy settings that control who can see your information and contact you. Let’s make sure yours are set up the way you want them.
For WhatsApp, tap Settings (on iPhone it’s in the bottom right, on Android it’s the three dots in the top right), then tap “Privacy.” Here you can control:
Last Seen: This shows people when you were last active on WhatsApp. You can set this to “Everyone,” “My Contacts,” or “Nobody.” Most people choose “My Contacts” so family can see you’re active, but strangers can’t.
Profile Photo: Control who can see your profile picture. We recommend “My Contacts” for this too.
About: Your status message that appears under your name. Same deal – “My Contacts” is usually a safe bet.
Read Receipts: Those little blue checkmarks that show when you’ve read a message. If you turn this off, people can’t see when you’ve read their messages, but you also won’t see when they’ve read yours.
For Messenger, tap your profile picture in the top left, scroll down to “Privacy & Safety,” and you can control similar settings. The main ones to pay attention to are who can message you (we recommend “Friends” rather than “Everyone”) and whether your Active Status is visible (shows when you’re currently using Messenger).
Here’s our general advice for seniors: lean toward more privacy rather than less. Set things to “My Contacts” or “Friends” instead of “Everyone.” This keeps random people from messaging you or seeing your information. Your actual family and friends will still be able to contact you just fine.
Making the Most of Your New Messaging App
Once you’re all set up, here are some ways to really enjoy WhatsApp or Messenger:
Start a daily check-in routine. Maybe every morning with your coffee, you open the app and see what your family has been up to. It becomes a pleasant little ritual, like reading the newspaper used to be.
Share the little moments, not just the big ones. Your family doesn’t need you to send a professionally composed message every time. A quick photo of the flowers in your garden, a “thinking of you” message, or even just a heart emoji on their posts – these tiny touches keep you connected.
Use voice messages when typing feels like too much work. Both apps let you hold down a microphone button and record your voice instead of typing. It’s like leaving a voicemail, but in a chat. Some people love this feature once they discover it.
Don’t stress about response time. Nobody expects you to reply instantly. Some people check these apps constantly, others check once a day. Find your own rhythm and stick to it. Your family will adapt.
Ask your kids or grandkids to teach you fun features. Maybe they can show you how to use stickers, how to create a custom emoji, or how to change the chat color. Letting them be the teacher sometimes makes them feel good and keeps the interaction fun.
You’re Closer to Your Family Than You Think
Setting up WhatsApp or Messenger might seem like just downloading an app, but it’s really about something bigger. It’s about not missing out on family moments. It’s about seeing your grandkids’ faces when they call from college. It’s about being part of the group chat where everyone shares jokes and makes plans. It’s about staying involved in your family’s daily life even when distance keeps you physically apart.
The technology is just the tool. What matters is the connection it enables.
So take that first step. Download the app. Send that first message. Join that family group chat. Your family is waiting to hear from you, and once you’re set up, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.
