Now Serving Laguna Woods Village

We're glad to say it plainly: Teach Me Tech OC now serves Laguna Woods Village, in addition to the rest of Orange County we've always covered. If you live in the Village, or your parent does, you can now book an in-home tech session or a companionship visit right there, no drive required.

Laguna Woods Village is one of the more interesting places in the county to talk about technology and aging, because so much is already happening. With around 18,000 residents 55 and older, it's a genuinely active community, and a lot of that activity is tech related. We wanted our first Laguna Woods post to reflect that, not just announce ourselves and move on.

The PC Club Is Already Doing Something Right

If you haven't looked into it, the Laguna Woods PC Club (thepcclub.org) runs a real learning center with real workshops, and the class list is more interesting than you'd expect. Genealogy research, cybersecurity basics, even sessions on AI. That's not filler content. Those are exactly the topics adult children search for on behalf of their parents, and here they are, already being taught, by neighbors, in the Village.

We want to be clear about this: the PC Club is a good thing, full stop. A room full of people learning together, run by people who live in the same community, is hard to replace and we're not trying to. If you're new to the Village or new to a topic, a PC Club class is a great, low-cost place to start.

What a Class Can't Do (And Isn't Trying To)

A class has a schedule and a group pace. That's the whole point of a class, and it works well for a lot of things. But it also means the class moves on whether you followed the last step or not, and it meets when it meets, not when you have a free hour.

That's where a private session fits in, not as competition, but as the next step. Maybe the class covered password managers in fifteen minutes and you needed forty. Maybe you want someone sitting next to you at your own kitchen table, going as slow as you need, with no one else waiting their turn. And maybe it's something a class was never going to cover anyway, like the scam call you got twenty minutes ago and are still shaking about, or setting up the new phone your son mailed you last week. That's a private visit, on your schedule, in your home.

Two Kinds of Visits, Now in Laguna Woods

We offer two things, and both are now available in the Village. Tech education sessions run $150 an hour, with $50 off your first one, and cover anything from a new phone to cleaning up a slow laptop to setting up video calls with grandkids. Companionship sessions run $75 an hour and are exactly what they sound like: a friendly, background-checked person who comes by to talk, keep you company, and help with whatever small tech thing comes up along the way.

A lot of our Laguna Woods visits so far are turning out to be some mix of both. Someone books a tech session and it turns into a good conversation. Someone books a companionship visit and it turns out their tablet's been acting up for weeks. We don't mind. That's the job.
